SideWalker Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the SideWalker?

Walking your dog shouldn’t be a drag. Gentle and effective, the SideWalker helps your dog learn appropriate leash behavior. Designed with a “self-teaching” system, the SideWalker allows your dog to associate his unwanted leash behavior with a stimulation emitted from his receiver collar, effectively eliminating unwanted leash behavior.

How does the SideWalker work?

Your dog’s SideWalker receiver collar is equipped with a sensor under the collar strap that detects when there is excessive pulling on the leash. Activated by your dog pulling on the leash, this sensor emits a harmless vibration to your dog’s collar. As your dog continues to pull, the vibration increases and resets when the pulling stops. Although most dogs quickly associate the vibration with the need to stop, it’s important to always have the level on your dog’s receiver collar set to an appropriate level.

How do I fit the SideWalker to my dog?

In order to best detect your dog’s behavior, it’s important to have the collar placed appropriately and accurately on the small of your dog’s neck, just below his ears. The collar should be snug enough so your dog can feel the correction stimulation, but loose enough to move when the dog moves. To ensure optimal reliability, the SideWalker should be placed opposite the “D” ring, or where the leash attached to the collar strap. Without proper placement, the SideWalker may be unnecessarily or inconsistently triggered.

How long does the battery charge last?

All of our DogWatch products are made with only the most innovative and durable batteries, saving you money and time. For that reason, you can rely on your SideWalker Leash Trainer to last several days. However, it is important to remember that frequency of use and activation by your dog’s pulling will affect the battery life. For example, a collar worn for a longer period of time and activated frequently will need to be recharged more often than a collar worn for shorter periods and activated less frequently.

How long does the rechargeable battery last and is it replaceable?

It’s time to stop worrying about changing batteries or keeping them charged. With the DogWatch SideWalker, these worries are virtually irrelevant. Only needing to be recharged after significant decrease, these replacement batteries save you both time and money. Not only are they cost-effective, but our rechargeable batteries typically last several years and are easy to replace when necessary.

Do I need to take the SideWalker off the dog when not in use?

We recommend removing your dog’s SideWalker when it is not in use. Not only does this preserve the battery life of your leash trainer, but this will prevent accidental activation.

How do I pick the setting that is best for my dog?

It is important to first assess your dog’s reaction to the SideWalker before choosing a correction setting. Turning on the collar and setting it to “V” (Vibration) mode, place the SideWalker opposite the “D” ring. Gently pulling on the leash, observe carefully for your dog’s reaction. Look for little signals such as a head shake, ear twitch, or change in barking behavior. These signs indicate that your dog has responded to the leash trainer and that the level of correction is appropriate. If you do not see any signs that your dog noticed the correction from the SideWalker, you can increase the setting by one level. Never increase more than one level at a time. Repeat this process until you see a subtle sign of your dog responding to the leash trainer.

How long will it take for my dog to stop pulling (or to respond when I pull)?

Most dogs begin to associate their undesired leash behavior with the SideWalker correction after several activations of their receiver collar. If your dog’s receiver collar fits appropriately and is equipped with the correct size contact posts, you should see a noticeable change in your dog’s behavior. However, no two dogs are alike and there are many variables to take into consideration. The biggest of these factors is personality. Your dog’s personality plays a vital role in how quickly his pulling behavior will change. For example, pulling behavior in timid dogs may change more rapidly than in dogs with a stronger personality. Among other things are your dog’s tolerance for distractions when pulling and the triggers at which your dog pulls.

How do I know the SideWalker is working?

All of our SideWalker Leash Trainers are equipped with a Status Light. This Status Light will provide you with information regarding your dog’s leash trainer, such as confirmation that the collar is working. When the Status Light on your dog’s collar blinks green, this is an indication that his collar is both charged and functioning appropriately. Alternatively, the SideWalker may also vibrate briefly when you turn it on, indicating it is working correctly.

How do I test the SideWalker?

First, set your SideWalker Leash Trainer to the “V” (Vibration) mode.* Testing your leash trainer is simple – just turn the SideWalker dial to one of the stimulation settings (1-5) and place the SideWalker Test Light over the contact posts. Pressing down on the sensor, the light on the Test Light should illuminate, indicating proper functioning.

* There will be a 10-second delay before your SideWalker turns on.
